Fairy Wands

These painted wooden wands were a hit with Fern and her friends. Super simple and look great. We used them in my ‘Imagination’ music video.

I got these plain wooden wands from Global Gumnuts and Nursery. They are a great Australian resource for some environmentally friendly options, crafts and tools.

I popped some acrylic paint on a tupperware lid, gave Fern a small paint brush and away she went. I love using our outdoor coffee table because the height is great for a standing toddler. I cover the table in recycled paper so it doesn’t get too messy, and have a bowl of soapy water and a cloth ready to go when she gets covered in paint.

We didn’t have every colour that we wanted to use, but had some fun experimenting and mixing different colours together. Fern enjoyed the mixing process and seeing new colours emerge through her efforts.

I was so impressed with her focus and ability to paint the wands, I just helped her touch up the handles and made sure the paint wasn’t too thick. We then left them out to dry and painted on some glitter glue.

Making wands was a rewarding activity for Fern because she got to paint something that she could play with afterwards and give as a present to her friends. I was worried she would be too attached to them to give them away, but I was so proud of her when she gave them to her little friends with glee.

If you are doing this activity, you can have fun with different decorating techniques, including paints and pens. You could also use gemstones, stickers and sparkles, and tie some thin ribbons under the star, so the wand is extra fun to twirl around.

As Fern was only 2.5 when she helped paint these wands, we went with a more simple option.

Have fun, and enjoy the magic!
