Fairy Wings
We made these costume wings for my ‘Imagination’ music video. Fern is obsessed with fairies and was so excited seeing them come together.
We used thick recycled paper from Officeworks, but you could also use light cardboard or card.
I filled a muffin tin with poster paint and Fern painted the paper freely with a paint brush and her hands.
I helped her fold the paper in half, and she patted her hands on the folded paper and opened it up to reveal the fairy wing / butterfly pattern. This part is so exciting as the results are always a surprise!
We pegged the wet paper to the clothes line and when they were dry, Fern painted the other side of the paper and we repeated the process.
Once dry, Fern painted on some glitter glue to add some sparkle. Again, once dry, I folded the paper back in half and drew an outline of some wings and cut them out. This part is a bit too tricky for a toddler!
To make the straps, we cut some strands of ribbon to size, and stuck them in a loop with a hot glue gun to a square piece of cardboard, and then glued the cardboard to the middle of the wings.
As a finishing touch and to add a bit more structure, we glued a large paddle pop stick to the centre of the back of the wings to look like the spine.
And there you have it! Quite a long process, but the results were so delightful, and surprisingly, months on, they are still intact. I really thought they would only survive for the duration of filming my music video, but what a treat! Video link below.
