Yarn Sticks

A peaceful activity for kids. Best suited for 4+ year olds, assisted by an adult or older child, but my 2 year old still had fun having a go and cutting with scissors for the first time.

Making yarn sticks is a beautiful way to connect, overcome obstacles, and create something special together. You can weave in your own meanings and metaphors. Even if you end up doing most of it, they still benefit from the shared experience.

There’s no wrong or right way, but here is some loose direction -

Find some fallen sticks. Make sure ends aren’t too sharp, cut them with garden scissors if you want clean edges.

Use a selection of rainbow wool - can use individual colours but the rainbow wool makes it simple to achieve fun results.

Cut a long piece of wool and tie a knot on the stick and get winding! Leave enough wool when you are near the end to make a loop knot.

Add as many layers / colours of wool as you like. Can also add extra bits like fallen feathers, leaves and gumnuts or keep it simple.

The sticks can be used decoratively in a jar, or for open-ended play, e.g., wands and music sticks.

✅ focus ✅ meditative ✅ overcoming obstacles ✅ coordination ✅ creativity ✅ connection with nature ✅ open-ended play ✅ minimal waste
